Subtraction Statement Sums With Borrow
In statement sum we are given a statement. We have to analyse the statement and then take appropriate action.
Following steps are required to solve the statement
1. Read the statement carefully
2. Find the values that are given
3. Find the quantity which is required
4. Then perform the process to reach the desired result.
Let us consider the following example;
Out of 53 toffees, Suman and her brother ate 17. How many toffees are left?
1. We will first analyse the statement
2. We will find the values that are given
In the question it is given that
Out of 53 toffees, Suman and her brother ate 17.
So, Total number of toffees = 53
No. of toffees Suman and her brother ate = 17
3. We will find the quantity which is required
In the question it is asked that
How many toffees are left?
To find number of toffees left
We will perform subtraction as we are supposed to find the no. of toffees left
53 - 17 = ?
We will perform the required operation
We will first subtract the digits at units place that is we will subtract 7 from 3. But we cannot subtract as 7 is bigger than 3.
So we will regroup 53
53 = 50 + 3
= 5 tens + 3 ones
= 4 tens + 1 ten + 3 ones
= 4 tens + 10 ones + 3 ones
= 4 tens + 13 0nes.
We will now subtract 7 from 13 we get 6
We will place 6 at the unit place of the answer.
Then we will subtract the digits at tens place that is we will subtract 1 from 4 we will get 3
We will place the 3 at tens place in the answer.
Hence the answer is 36
Hence number of toffees left in the box are 36.
